My husband, the Beaver Wrangler

Ben has been doing a lot of stuff with animals lately.  Baby falcon earlier this week and today, rescuing a beaver.  He released it back into the wild this evening.

Ditching the Cable Bill

When we moved into our new house almost a year ago, I decided to re-enter the world of a digital cable consumption. Through out the last 12 years, we have gone for several multi-year stints without it. Sometimes because of finances and sometimes because of personal choices.

We never had cable in Colorado (3 years) - we survived on your basic major networks thanks to a good ole fashioned antennae. Ben has never been fond of cable - mainly because he thinks it's a time suck and he doesn't really watch much tv anyway. I've always been the one that wanted it when he didn't. When we moved to Kansas a year ago, I got a good deal through Uverse and decided to hook it up...thinking I would cancel it when the promo period was up. Of course, they just suckered me into a higher plan when my promo period was up. Those darn dvr's sure are cool.

It actually has been nice to have during the past year because Ben has spent more time on his backside than he has his whole life, I'm sure, recovering from chemo treatments. The TV kept him mildly entertained during those times. Now that he is done with chemo and life has resumed it's normal break-neck pace, there hasn't been a whole lot of time to watch tv - at least for me and Ben. And I'm not exactly ok with the fact that my toddler watches more tv than me. I have noticed a direct correlation between the amount of tv she watches and how naughty she is. Eeek.

So, anyway, Linkan is enrolled in a "pre" preschool in the fall. Ben was cool with one morning a week but I wanted two mornings so I suggested that I turn off the cable to pay for the extra expense of two days. He was ecstatic. Haha So, in the meantime, I've been researching alternative options so that we can still watch the few shows that we enjoy...but not pay the ridiculous monthly expense of digital cable. We already have Netflix streaming. Ive been test driving Hulu Plus and I think I'll keep that around, I'm totally bummed because I can't seem to find any alternative options for Bravo. :( Or River Monsters for Ben (Animal planet). And I still can't find anything on Linkan's favorite show, The Little Einsteins. Other than that, I think I have her covered with PBS kids and Disney Junior either through iPad apps, Netflix or Hulu plus. She doesn't care if the episode is new or old. And let's face it, sometimes I need to stick her in front of the tube in order to get certain things done during the day.

I guess I'm just going to have to do without my Real Housewives for now...oh how I love/hate watching dysfunction...hopefully I am able to find Hoarders on Netflix because one episode is all the motivation I need to clean the house! I think I just need to rip the band-aid off and turn off the cable this week (hands trembling). I'll let you know how that goes...

I would love to hear from you if you have ditched the cable bill too. What mediums are you using to get your shows? Fill me in!
